About Me

I’ve been speaking publicly for more than 35 years and have spoken at hundreds of events across the United States and internationally. I’ve appeared on over 200 radio shows and scores of television shows, including The O’Reilly Factor.

The Ministry Side

I was a lead pastor for 24 years in growing churches in Texas and Oregon. I’ve served on the faculty of Man in the Mirror and spoken at MIM seminars throughout the United States. I’ve also spoken at events for Promise Keepers, Iron Sharpens Iron, Million Mighty Men, Young Life, The Gathering of Men and Campus Crusade for Christ. The list of churches who have hosted men’s event’s where I’ve spoken include almost every brand in the country including—Baptist, Christian Missionary Alliance, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Foursquare, Assembly of God, Friends, Lutheran, Church of God, Willow Creek Association, Missionary Alliance, Methodist, Christian Reformed, Calvary Chapel, Community, and Independent Bible churches.

I love to write and speak. I’ve written or collaborated on 22 published books, including notes for the PK Study Bible, The Leadership Bible and The Journey—a Bible for spiritual seekers. My two best sellers are When Good Men are Tempted and Six Battles Every Man Must Win and my most recent books are, The Jesus Experiment and Why Naked Women Look so Good . . . understanding and meeting a woman’s deepest needs.

The Business Side

In 1995 I wrote Give’em the Pickle! with restaurateur Robert Farrell. This book has transformed the way companies do business. It’s a catchy title and most people wonder what it means. Actually, the “pickle” represents service that exceeds the customer’s expectation and causes them to utter those three magic words: “I’ll be back!” After the publication of the book I traveled the country with Bob Farrell teaching companies how to build a pickle factor by creating an environment where every employee’s pickle jar is so full they’re able to give pickles to their customers. It’s been fun interacting with some of the best service companies in the world.

I’m greatly blessed with an amazing wife and a happy marriage. I mean that. I remember on our 13th anniversary Cindy said, “Well, that’s 12 happy years of marriage.” I thought I had caught her forgetting our wedding date and mentioned it to her. She smiled and said, “I didn’t think the first year was happy.” So when I say a “happy marriage” she’s nodding her head in agreement–except for the first year. Cindy and I have three sons and two grand-children. We live in West Linn, Oregon and enjoy biking, cooking, working out, reading and scuba diving.

I speak on topics related to men’s issues, leadership, and customer service. Most of the events are based on one of my books. When I speak at men’s events 70% of the men who are not in a small group at the time of the event will commit to a follow-up group. This is crucial because lifestyle change occurs best in the context of community. I’ve also done leadership seminars for churches as well as church-wide events. When I speak for corporations the focus is on leadership and service, and every keynote and seminar is customized so well that attendees often think I’m part of the company.

Keep in mind that I can present these as a keynote or seminar. Most men’s seminars occur on Friday night through Saturday noon. However, seminars can be scheduled for all-day on Saturday or as a weekend retreat.

The Jesus Experiment The Jesus ExperimentAn experiment is an operation or procedure carried out under controlled conditions in order to test or establish a hypothesis or illustrate a known law. The hypothesis of this book and seminar is that Jesus Christ gives a rich and satisfying life to those who follow him (John 10:10b). At this seminar participants (men only, or men and women or the entire church) participants will live the Jesus experiment and discover the reliability of his promise when they follow in his steps. This seminar is life changing because it transforms how participants feel, think, speak and act.
